There are many reasons to fondly remember the W116-generation of Mercedes-Benz's luxury sedans, which became to be known as the S-Class. It was Friedrich Geiger's last design for the Three-Pointed Star, bringing to an end an illustrious career that started in the '30s with the 500K. The design, which was finalized in late 1969, represented a leap forward for Mercedes-Benz sedans. It also debuted a more reliable, more advanced variation of the hydropneumatic suspension pioneered by Citroen.
This 350 SE is finished in silver and features a beautifully preserved tan interior. It is powered by a 147kW 3.5L V8 engine, mated with an automatic transmission, delivering smooth, swift progress. This particular car features the later, more reliable K-Jetronic fuel-injection system. The car was the subject of an "open-cheque-book" restoration 15 years ago (at Orbit Motors Cape Town). Its most recent owner was a foreigner who only drove it while visiting the Mother City. It is in exceptional all-round condition.
