Launched at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show, the Bruno-Sacco designed W140-generation S-Class was labelled as the "last bastion of excess" or a "cathedral on wheels" at a time when fuel price increases along with mounting environmental pressures were weighing heavily on not only car manufacturers, but also society's "high flyers".

The development for the W140 series (a replacement for the much-loved W126) began as far back as 1981, but with pressure coming from all angles, including competition against old-foes BMW (which launched a V12, somewhat unexpectedly), a strong newcomer in the shape of the first-generation Lexus LS400, as well as market perception fears and so on, the result was a complicated, drawn-out $1bn development process that nearly bankrupted Mercedes-Benz, but which was ultimately necessary to ensure the S-Class was once again the king of the luxury sedans. Laden with all the tech…a list too long to mention (literally), it was truly a masterpiece on wheels when it eventually reached the market.

The who’s who of the world eagerly lined up for the new big 'Benz, from dictators to princesses, and the sheer number of variants produced by Mercedes must have set the tone for what we expect nowadays in terms of model line-ups.

The S500 detailed here belonged to a Dealer Principal of Mercedes-Benz East London. The car was specified with what must have been every extra optional feature (we have the official Mercedes Factory Print that details all the specs) available at the time. Yes, it even has the double-glazed windows, but contrary to popular belief these are not actually armoured - their purpose was purely to lower noise levels in the cabin.

Unfortunately, the first owner passed away a few years ago and his family parked his ‘Sunday church car’ in the garage. Years passed before the estate was wound up and that’s when the dealer listing this vehicle was able to acquire a lovely one-owner S-Class that is in impeccable condition inside and out.

The dealer has since serviced and replaced everything that was required so it runs like the day it glided off the factory floor. Judging by the condition of the rear seats, for example, it doesn’t look like anyone accompanied the first owner on his Sunday drives.

The mileage for this era of Mercedes-Benz means it’s just about run-in so the new caretaker should enjoy many more kilometres in absolute comfort. The condition is as such that we expect it to find a fitting home in a Mercedes-Benz collection.
