When Volkswagen launched its Mk3 Golf many enthusiasts felt let down by the meagre 85kW and leisurely performance offered by the more luxurious, comfort-oriented GTI. Little did they know that Volkswagen would hit back with something rather unexpected, a big-capacity 6-cylinder Golf to chase down cars such as BMW's 3 Series!

The VR6 has since become something of a fan-favourite in South Africa, with its engine sound being a particular highlight, and often amplified with aftermarket exhaust systems. Finding an original, unmolested car, is rather difficult.
