FOR SALE: 2001 Jaguar X-Type 3.0 AWD Classic (Manual)

Jaguar's X-Type was a fine-handline sports sedan in the early noughties, and this could be one of the rarest examples of its kind in South Africa - a 3.0 V6 coupled with all-wheel drive and... a manual transmission!

Jaguar was in an expansionary mood in the early 2000s - under the ownership of Ford it was aiming for the German Big Three in volume terms, and key to its plans was the X-Type, dubbed by some media back then as "the most important Jaguar ever."

Jaguar X-Type

Of course, Jaguar and Ford eventually parted ways and the X-Type didn't achieve its maker's lofty ambitions, but it was a sweet-handling machine based on the highly-acclaimed Ford Mondeo of the time. It was manufactured until 2009.

This example

Initially, the X-Type was available only in All-Wheel Drive form, but eventually the volume sellers were the front-wheel drive examples. This particular car is an early UK-market X-Type, featuring the centre differential and maintenance-free viscous coupling. The torque split was 60 per cent to the rear (but continuously variable), with the goal being a rear-biased dynamic experience. What makes this car even more special is that it is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission.

Finished in Titanium Metallic (dark blue), this "Classic" specification model features a full black leather interior, electrically adjustable and heated front seats, electric sunroof and much more. It has two complete sets of keys/remotes and is fully carpeted with a mint spare wheel, tools and jack.

Jaguar X-Type

First sold by a UK agent in Mayfair, London to Debenhams, a large UK department store, this X-Type was serviced until December 2003 by Grange Jaguar in Exeter and in February 2005 by Holland Brothers Jaguar in Lincoln. Subsequently it was imported to South Africa and occasionally used on gravel, as evidenced by slight gravel "rash" around the front of the car.

The current owner bought the car in 2016 and has made several repairs and improvements, with major mechanical work carried out by Jaguar Cars Cape Town, including;

  • Re-programming remote and diagnostic test
  • New wheel nuts and wheel badges
  • Fitting new steering gaiters and wheel alignment
  • Fitting new sump gasket and thermostat.
  • Fitting new front driveshafts
  • Fitting new rear brake discs and pads
  • Fitting a new flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate.
  • Fitting new rebound rubbers to rear suspension
  • New radiator expansion tank
  • New battery
  • Air-con regassed
  • New Jaguar leaper
  • New front tyres
  • Front wheels trued and spare wheel reconditioned
  • Headlining replaced professionally

Invoices for all repairs and other minor expenses, including servicing, are available.

The current owner is a Jaguar enthusiast (an E-Type owner/restorer) and made a few subtle improvements of his own. He manufactured a new engine valance to replace the plastic original. This is made from aluminium and has ducts to direct airflow over the sump and front brakes. He also repaired all wheel-arch liners and modified the sump with cooling fins whilst it was removed to weld up a small leak. He removed the boot-mounted CD player and replaced it with a toolbox to contain tools, spare fluids etc. Finally, he also modified the Jaguar leaper on the bonnet to make it easily removable for safe keeping.

Classic cars for sale in South Africa

The car is a reluctant sale and includes the original owner’s handbooks, a Haynes Workshop Manual, Jaguar Heritage Certificate and all paperwork covering its service history under the current ownership. It is licensed until 1 February 2023. It has recently had its wheel alignment done.

There are very minor faults such as intermittent reverse warnings and non-functioning speed control. There are a few tiny dents to the bodywork and the usual hairline scratches and scuffs one can expect on a car of this vintage but overall it is clean, very presentable and in excellent condition. It represents a lot of luxury motoring for the price.
