When the first-generation (C219) CLS was introduced as a 4-door "Grand Coupe" in 2004, it caused quite a stir as Mercedes-Benzes of this size have generally been quite conservative in design. For the CLS Mercedes' designers threw the rulebook away, coming up with a design that will surely be a future classic.

The swoopy design of the CLS came as a shock to traditional Mercedes-Benz customers in 2004, but with the E-Class continuing, this new model was never meant as a replacement, but rather and additional derivative to tempt new, younger customers to the Three-Pointed Star.

Essentially a reskinned W211-generation E-Class, the C219 CLS was still a spacious, luxurious car that competed with the likes of the (then-new) Porsche Panamera and Audi A7 Sportback. Not a single exterior body panel was shared with the E-Class, with the CLS even boasting frameless door windows.

This particular example is finished in silver and boasts a grey/black interior upholstery/carpeting with dark veneer wood trim. It's a striking, clean example riding on 5-spoke 18-inch wheels. As befits a "500" 'Benz, this CLS is loaded with luxury features, including rear camera display built into the rear-view mirror and adjustable suspensions settings.

 

The engine is a 5.0L V8 that delivers 225kW and 460Nm of torque, driving the rear wheels via the brand's 7G-Tronic automatic transmission. It also offers the option of manual shifting, and Mercedes-Benz claimed a 0-100kph time of 6.3 seconds and a 250kph top speed - certainly swift!
