BMW SA Chronicles EP.5 - The "naughty" '90s

In the fifth episode of our video series celebrating the 50th Anniversary of BMW in South Africa, we look at the special cars of the '90s, and the brand's edgy marketing efforts.

As South Africa came out of isolation, it was ready to show its automotive production capabilities to the world. This meant building cars like the 3, 5, 7 and even the 8 Series.

All of those didn't stop BMW SA from producing its very own special editions though, modifying the E34 540i with local specification and a 6-speed manual gearbox of which just 72 were available.

It wasn't just about the cars though as BMW SA started to push the boundaries of advertising and marketing. Who can forget the cheeky ads of the '90s where BMW would taunt its rivals?
